Red Ball Express truck. GMC 2 1/2 ton truck was one of the the most common vehicle in U.S. Army inventory.

Nex to the jeep the Jeep, the GMC 2 1/2 ton truck was the most common vehicle in U.S. Army inventory.


The Red Ball Express operated for three months, from the breakout in Normandy until the opening of the port in Antwerp. At its peak the Red Ball Express operated 6,000 vehicles carrying over 12,000 tons of supplies per day. About 75% of the drivers were African Americans.

The delivery of troops and supplies was hampered during the Battle of the Bulge by poor weather. Chains wrapped around the tires were designed to enable the trucks to traverse snow and ice.


However, this system had limits and pictured is a truck which has spun around and landed in the ditch, blocking the road.
