Panzerkampfwagen III tank - German Panzer III

Panzerkampfwagen III (Panzer III)

The Panzer III was a German medium tank first built in small numbers in 1936, and was intended to be the main battle tank. The first four models were all successivley withdrawn shortly after introduction, and it was not until 1939 that the fifth (or Ausf E version) was formally accepted into the army and mass production begun. The tank was initially constructed with 15 mm armor and armed with a 37 mm gun, and was successively upgraded until it reached its limit of 50 mm of armor and a long barrel 50 mm gun. The last version (Ausf N) introduced in mid 1942 was no longer intended as a battle tank, but with 57 mm of armor and a short barrel 75 mm gun was a slow moving infantry tank. Photo shows a captured Panzer III of the German Africa Corps being inspected by British soldiers. Approximately 5,700 Panzer IIIs were built.
