Pershing tank - American heavy tank

M26 Pershing heavy tank

The M26 Pershing was an American heavy tank that didn't see combat until the closing months of World War II, February 1945, where it was introduced in the European Theater. Development was slowed in 1942 because the Sherman tank was evaluated in combat against German Panzer tanks and found to be sufficient. Consequently the Allied command did not foresee the arrival of German Panther and Tiger tanks in the near future. The Allies had no heavy tank such as the Pershing to effectively counter the new German heavy tanks. The Pershing was never introduced into the Pacific Theater because Japan had no heavy tanks.
