M18 Hellcat Tank Destroyer

The M18 Hellcat was the last version of tank destroyer accepted in the U.S. Army. While the tank destroyers could inflict heavy damage on German armor under the right conditions, good hiding spots were not as frequent as originally envisioned. When spotted by the enemy the tank destroyers suffered higher casualty rates than other allied tanks in a comparable situation. Lacking a covering on the top of the turret, the tank destroyers were also susceptible to casualties from small arms. With the advent of proximity fuses, it was possible for artillery to inflict casualties on tank destroyer crews through the open top turret without actually scoring a direct hit.
