"No one foot of our land will be given to the enemy."

This quotation is from a radio speech by Joseph Stalin, July 3, 1941, to the people of Russian. He calls for the people to "fight to the last drop of blood for our towns and villages" necessitated by the invasion of the Soviet Union by Germany on June 22, 1941 (Operation Barbarossa).

This invasion had broken the non-aggression pact between Germany and the Soviet Union.

The initial assault came as a surprise to Stalin even though he had held Hitler in suspicion. Lack of preparation on the part of the Soviet forces caused early victories for the Germans. Lasting from June 22, 1941, to May 9, 1945, the German invasion of Russian was called the Great Patriotic War by the Russians, and became the Eastern Front of World War II.

The invasion of the Soviet Union by the Germans began with the Nazi bombing of Soviet occupied Poland. As the invasion continued, all of the lands captured by the Soviet Union during the past two years, were taken over by Germany, and the Nazis continued to push into Russia.

A Soviet propaganda campaign was initiated to raise morale in the Red Army, however, aggressive punishment was also used in an attempt at using terror to create an effective military defense against Germany. Stalin gave a series of orders which included: the shooting of deserters and the arrests of their family members; commanders retreating without permission were subject to military hearings; every member of the Red Army was required to commit suicide rather than surrender; and any captured Soviet soldiers were to be treated as traitors.
