Allied Bombing of Germany

"...our supreme effort must be to gain overwhelming mastery in the air. The fighters are our salvation, but the bombers alone can provide the means to victory." Winston Churchill.

Aerial bombing of Germany was used from 1941 - 1945. By 1943, allied bombing of Germany had escalated, causing great destruction of German cities. During the last week of July 1943, Hamburg was pounded for 8 days and 7 nights by bombing raids which destroyed most of the city; the night were raids flown by the British and the daylight raids by the Americans.

Nazi poster: "The enemy sees your light. Blackout!" Everyone was instructed to cover up their windows at night with black material. This was to make it difficult for night bombers to find their target in the dark.
