in the WAAAF

During WWII the WAAAF (Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force) was the auxiliary branch of the Royal Australian Air Force.

Formed in 1941, these women worked in communications and maintenance, and filled jobs as clerks, cooks, and drivers. Volunteers were recruited between the ages of 18-32 in order for allow more men to serve over seas.

WAAAF recruiting poster. "Keep them flying! There's a job for you in the WAAAF. Apply at RAAF Recruiting Centre or Committee in Your District" Poster was created Walter Lacy Jardine, who was commissioned to produce posters for the Department of Defense during the Second World War. 1942.
