Sculpture depicts Merchant Marine ships under attack in World War II.

During World War II, the Merchant Marine cargo, and liberty ships, were non-naval vessels that delivered food, supplies, ammunition, and troops to the Allies, and were manned by a civilian crews and officers. These ships also carried men from the U.S. Navy Armed Guard (a branch of the U.S Navy) who defended the merchant ships from enemy attack by providing gunners, and radio operators.


This Merchant Marine - U.S. Navy Armed Guard sculpture is part of a group which commemorate the individual sea services and are located at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA.
