P-40 Warhawks (Free French)

Pictured is a ceremony which officially transferred twelve former USAAF Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighters to the Free French combat fighter group GC II/5 in North Africa. GC II/5 used its P-40Fs and P-40 Ls in combat in Tunisia and later for patrol duty off the Mediterranean coast. Note the insignia (Indian war bonnet) just behind and below the cockpit. This was the emblem of the Lafayette Escadrille which was a French squadron of American volunteers in World War I.
