Commander of the Pearl Harbor Carrier Forces

Chuichi Nagumo

Admiral Nagumo was the commander of the aircraft carrier forces that successfully struck Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and who decided not to send a third attack after learning of the success of the initial two waves.

Sinking of the Four Japanese Carriers

Admiral Nagumo later commanded the aircraft carrier strikes into the Indian Ocean where the British aircraft carrier Hermes was sunk and the British fleet was temporarily routed. He also commanded the aircraft carrier force at Midway where all four Japanese aircraft carriers present in the attack were sunk. These four carriers had also been present in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Admiral Chuichi Nagumo committed suicide on July 6, 1944, as Allied forces closed in on his headquarters on Saipan.
