When the USS Hornet was built, the modern radar and communications antenna (painted in black at the top of the tower) were not present. Originally, only one small, primitive radar mast was present.  Note the slot in the deck for the aircraft catapult in the foreground. Aircraft carrier USS Hornet Museum.

The gray dome mounted aft (back side) of the conning tower also contains a rotating radar antenna that was added after World War Two. USS Hornet Museum.
